New Carrier Flying to Hawaii
Another New Carrier Flying to Hawaii
China’s largest carrier, Air China, is a new carrier flying to Hawaii. Air China’s first flight from Beijing landed in Honolulu on January 21, 2014 after much anticipation and fanfare. The China market represents a huge opportunity to the Hawaii visitor market. According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, this new direct route will generate tourist revenues of $80 million for the state.
Hopefully, the market for the Beijing to Honolulu route will perform better than flights on China Eastern. China Eastern had launched direct flights to Honolulu from Shanghai back in 2011. The Shanghai to Honolulu route was Hawaii’s first direct flights from Mainland China. But it really did not live up to the high expectations of the Hawaii tourism industry. One of the reasons cited for lack of better performance was the difficulty in getting travel visas to the US in mainland China.
But the airline industry seems to still be betting on market demand for airfare to Hawaii to and from Mainland China. China Eastern is still continues to operate its Shanghai to Honolulu route. While Hawaiian Airline will also be offering service to and from Beijing, beginning in April 2014.
So it seems like 2014 could be a year where the State of Hawaii could see a dramatic increase in visitors from China. Let’s see what happens.
