Will More Hawaii Flights Mean Better Airfare Prices?

The short answer is yes. Is this a surprise when economic principles of supply and demand usually prevail in most businesses? Needless to say the airline business is no exception to this rule. More Hawaii flights mean better airfare prices to Hawaii, which is all good news for Hawaii’s tourists and residents alike.

Actual Real Life Examples

Hawaii business publication, Pacific Business News, had looked into this. Their example is when Virgin America announced a special $398 round trip fare. They did this to launch their new Los Angeles to Hawaii route. Hawaiian Airlines immediately matched it. Affordability in airfares to Hawaii from the US West Coast is important to the Hawaii visitor industry. This is because it continues to be the Aloha State’s number one visitor market.

Another example was when inter-island carrier Island Air special $63 one-way fare to Kauai. They did this to promote their return to Kauai. Again, Hawaiian Airlines matched it. Island Air’s service to Kauai will begin on March 15, 2016. On the same date, they also restored direct service to Lanai. Based on this, competitors would be offering matching fares when and if Island Air begins interisland service to the Big Island.

Prospects for 2016

Pacific Business News also reports carriers serving Hawaii are gearing up for additional flight capacity. For example, Delta Airlines recently added a Seattle to Kona route. Korean carrier, Jin Air, just offered a new Seoul to Honolulu route. While Hawaiian will be offering a new Honolulu to Narita service in July 2016. Also in the works for 2016 are a Kuala Lumpur to Osaka to Honolulu route by Air Asia. While Cebu Pacific is planning a Manila to Honolulu route.

All of this spells good news for the Hawaii tourism industry. This also bodes well for those who’ll take advantage of any lower airfare to as well as from Hawaii. Combined with lower fuel prices, 2016 is beginning to look like a good year for Hawaii tourism.
