Allegiant Says Aloha To Hawaii
Allegiant Says Aloha to Hawaii
Allegiant says aloha to Hawaii? When will this finally happen? There have been numerous and often conflicting information on this subject. Since it first started service in 2012, the carriers has been steadily decreasing its flights to Hawaii.
The Honolulu Star Advertiser reported on this in March 26, 2016. It said Allegiant Air would not be totally getting out of the Hawaii market as originally reported. Previously, Allegiant indicated that their last flights to and from Hawaii would be ending in August 2016. According to this newspaper report, the carrier would continue to fly between Las Vegas and Honolulu through the 2017 holiday season. However, the carrier still planned to discontinue service to Honolulu from Los Angeles on August 2016.
Reasons for the Changes
Here was the original reason given for exiting the Hawaii market. Allegiant’s fleet of leased Boeing 757s that they currently use for the Hawaii route would need extensive maintenance. The FAA requires this level of maintenance after a certain amount of miles flown by the aircraft. Supposedly, this would be a significant expense to the company. Reportedly, Allegiant did not want spend this amount money to continue to use these airplanes on its Hawaii routes.
It’s rather surprising that there was extensive media coverage when Allegiant announced their plans to exit the Hawaii market. Other than in Hawaii, one could not find a lot of information on the carrier’s plans to continue operating the Las Vegas to Hawaii route after August 2016. One would think that this is something that the company should have been publicizing in the Hawaii as well as in the Las Vegas markets.
The Expected End Date
The carrier certainly has had what could be categorized as a lot of negative press in the recent past. Due to a number of highly publicized emergency landing incidents, there have been reports in the media expressing concerns on how Allegiant maintains its fleet of aircraft. In January 2016, its Chief Operating Officer also resigned without giving reasons given for his departure.
When we last checked their website, you could not book a Las Vegas to Honolulu round trip past October 2017. So based on this, it looks like this is when finally Allegiant says aloha to Hawaii.
